Equipped with a 42-megapixel full-frame sensor with 5-axis image stabilization. The A7R II is also the mirrorless camera with the world's first 35mm BSI CMOS sensor. No wonder the price of the Sony A7R Mark II camera is quite expensive. In addition, a hybrid autofocus system and 4K video capability are installed.
As one of the best cameras from Sony, the A7R II obtains 5-axis image stabilization and an ergonomic design with a much more comfortable grip. In addition, the latest AF system is also faster and far more reliable.
This latest version also gets a 42-digit sensor (BSI) with a capacity of 42 megapixels. Along with the latest firmware upgrade, making it able to photograph 9 RAW that is not compressed 14-bit. The hybrid autofocus system is also quite sophisticated with a 399 focal point for phase-detection autofocus detection.
If the camera switches to contrast detection AF, there are 25 focus points available. With phase detection pixels integrated right in the sensor and image processor BIONZ X is quite fast. Sony A7R II promises autofocus performance up to 40% faster than its predecessor.
This high-powered autofocus system makes it possible to shoot at 5fps with continuous AF. This is Sony's best effort to make AF so it can be used for moving subjects. Interestingly, the electronic viewfinder (EVF) on the A7R II is really impressive.
A7R II is equipped with EVF with ZEISS T Coating to reduce surface reflection and magnification of the highest 0.78x viewfinder in the world. As for the LCD screen it remains the same on a 3 inch TFT drive with a capacity of 1,228,800 rGBW with an RGBW 921,600 screen.
The screen can also be tilted up to 107 degrees and down to 41 degrees. This mirrorless camera is also capable of capturing high resolution 4K video (3840 x 2160). Interestingly, the A7R II is the first mirrorless camera in the world to offer 4K full-frame recording in the camera.
To maximize performance, Sony's higher XAVC S bitrate file format is available, which supports 4K bitrates up to 100Mbps. Full HD and 720p video recording is also offered in the XAVC S format at 50Mbps which further complements the Sony A7R II specifications.
Advanced video features including Picture Profile support with gamma S-Log2 are also available. This feature is useful for increasing dynamic range control, REC control and timecode support. Not to forget also the A7R II is equipped with Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity built-in and uses the PlayStation application suite and Sony's mobile applications.
A variety of cable connectivity options are offered, including a 3.5mm stereo microphone jack with plug-in power, a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, an HDMI port (Micro Type D) and a USB 2.0 data or charging port.
Sony Alpha A7R II also has the ability to be controlled remotely via Wi-Fi connected to a smartphone. With this feature, you can do shutter release from a distance. The camera also has a cable lock shield to prevent the HDMI cable from being released. Unfortunately, the A7R II does not include a built-in flash.
A7R II saves images on Secure Digital cards, including higher capacity SDHC / SDXC types and high-speed UHS-I types. A7R II uses the same NP-FW50 lithium-ion battery pack as its predecessor.
While the battery life is still the same. When using an LCD monitor, the camera can take pictures up to 340 shots per charge. When switching to using EVF, the Sony A7R mark II is capable of taking pictures up to 290 shots per charge.
