Zeiss Batis 40mm f / 2 Lens Review

Zeiss Batis 40mm f / 2 lens is a mirrorless lens specifically for Sony E-mount cameras. The size of this lens is enough to cover a full frame sensor such as the Sony A7 and A9 camera series. Of course, this lens can also be installed on a Sony camera with APS-C sensor such as the Sony A6000 series, it's just that the angle of view will change to telephoto, equivalent to 60mm because there is a 1.5X crop factor.

For those who are experienced in photography, a 40mm focal distance might feel a little strange, but in recent years, I have seen more and more fix lenses that have a 40mm focal distance or its equivalent. The uniqueness of this 40mm Batis lens is that it can focus very close, which is 24 cm with a magnification of 1: 3 so it can be used for shooting small objects. Like other Batis lenses, this lens has been equipped with weathersealing, safe for adverse weather conditions such as rain or dust storms.

From the Zeiss perspective, a 40mm focal distance was chosen as a bridge between the 25mm f / 2 Batis and the 85mm f / 1.8 Batis. 40mm focal distance is classified as normal focal distance, not too wide, and not too windy / narrow, more or less similar to human eye sight. What is seen will be similar to what is captured.

The photos that can be produced are very good, sharp, the color is also warm and attractive. The results of this photo sometimes give the impression of being vintage or painterly like a painting. When shooting directly into a light source, the image quality remains contrasting, sharp and detailed, even though there is little flare.

For videography, this lens is also suitable, because the size is not too big and not too heavy so it is easy to put on the gimbal, the opening is large and the focal distance is good enough for various shooting scenarios. Its ability to focus more closely than other lenses in general makes videographers do not have to bother changing macro lenses when they have to record a small subject at close range.

40mm Batis hardly chooses weaknesses, some might feel that this lens is rather large for a fixed f / 2 opening lens size, but in my opinion it is very balanced with a Sony A7 camera. Another disadvantage that I encountered was when taking close-ups with background point-light sources, such as small lights, the bokeh was not completely rounded. However, nature captures the natural subjects that we encounter everyday, the bokeh still looks smooth and soft.

In conclusion, the Zeiss Batis 40mm f / 2 fits a variety of shooting conditions, from travel, portrait to close-up detail. The resulting image quality is sharp and full of detail is also practical because it is able to focus very close. If you shoot with a Sony A7 / A9 full frame mirrorless camera, the 40mm Zeiss Batis lens is very interesting to use for photography and videography.

And here is an example of a photo of a 35mm f / 1.4 Tamron SP lens:
