Tamron SP 35mm f / 1.4 fix lens Review

Tamron as a lens manufacturer from Japan already has several fix lens products for DSLRs such as SP 35mm f / 1.8, SP 45mm f / 1.8 and SP 85mm f / 1.8 available for Canon and Nikon. Not satisfied with the three lenses above, Tamron also finally released one 35mm fix lens whose aperture is greater that is SP 35mm f / 1.4 in USD. The code name can be recognized if this 35mm lens is a high quality SP lens, the code 'Di' means for full frame and 'USD', which means the ultrasonic motor is fast and quiet. This time we got the chance to try the Tamron SP 35mm f / 1.4 lens (with a Canon mount) to see how reliable the lens is for various circumstances, including what the bokeh is like, auto focus and of course sharpness.

Judging from the focal lens, the Tamron SP 35mm f / 1.4 is included in a wide lens, although certainly not as wide as a lens like 28mm or 24mm. So this 35mm focal lens is classified as many uses, for everyday use until commercial work will be able to rely a lot on this 35mm focal. If this lens is mounted on an APS-C camera, the focal lens will be equivalent to a 50mm lens in full frame, so it is OK for anyone to install this 35mm Tamron lens if it aims to be a 50mm lens, by attaching it to the APS-C body.

As a fixed lens, we don't doubt the optical quality of this lens, especially since Tamron itself has pride in this product as the culmination of their ability to produce a lens for 40 years, as Tamron said when releasing this lens: "We want to deliver a perfect image to people who love photography. "Congratulations to Tamron SP 35mm f / 1.4 fix lens By arranging 14 elements that are classified as very much for a fix lens (this lens is also not exactly small, 10cm long and weighs above 800 grams) it can be trusted that Tamron is indeed very serious in designing this lens. Additional elements to maintain photo quality such as BBAR II are also provided in this lens, maintaining flares and ghosting when shooting against light. This bokeh lens is also claimed to be soft and attractive with 9 round diaphragm blades, and aperture electronic type.

We had the opportunity to try this lens in various circumstances with two Canon DSLR cameras namely EOS 5D mk IV (full frame) and EOS 70D (APS-C). From the physical outside of the lens, the Tamron SP 35mm f / 1.4 looks solid with a metal bandage, with a large manual focus ring and is easy to rotate, of course there is a window of focus distance (from 30cm to infinity, reproduction ratio 1: 5) and because of the focus motor USD type so even though the focus mode lever is in the AF position we can still rotate the manual focus ring (something that cannot be done in other Tamron lenses that use OSD focus motors). The front element of the lens is quite large with a 72mm diameter filter, given a large hood that uses a lock system that is safe from accidental release, and on the back there is a rubber gasket to prevent water from entering the camera lens mount gap. Tamron himself claims that this lens is moisture resistant, which means that if used in a wet moist condition it is still safe from water entering through the lens gaps.

The first thing we tried of this lens was of course to find out how sharp the lens was in the biggest opening f / 1.4 and how the shape of the bokeh. When examined from all the specifications and performance of this 35mm Tamron lens, the main drawback in our opinion is the absence of VC features in this lens. It could be because with f / 1.4 Tamron thinks we no longer need VC or vibration stabilizers, in contrast to his sister SP 35mm f / 1.8 VC. Moreover, with its large size and rather heavy, this 35mm lens is more intended for use in the studio or using a tripod, while those who like traveling will be more practical to use 35mm f / 1.8 which is smaller, lighter and has its VC. But from the results of our testing of this lens, in general we are also pleased with the achievement of Tamron which has been aligned with other lens manufacturers in creating high quality 35mm fix lenses, both from built quality, optical sharpness, bokeh and auto focus performance with a selling price stay competitive.

And here is an example of a photo of a 35mm f / 1.4 Tamron SP lens:
